HAJIME

Hajime Niyama is a 15-year-old girl from IWAII (Hawaii). Her family moved to VEDANA CITY under orders of evacuation from IWAII three years ago. She is the older sister of Kenji Niyama.

She has black eyes and black hair that she completely bleached once her family moved to VEDANA. Reminiscent of the rainy and humid days in IWAII, she wears her yellow raincoat every single day.

Ever since moving away from IWAII, the Niyama parents have remained secluded in their room almost constantly. Hajime, an odd girl to begin with, has seemingly thrown away all of her cares and hopes, yet she retains a smiley disposition. Little can be understood about the mind of Hajime Niyama. She is a book that cannot be read.

I have design drafts and sketches of every character except Hajime. When I realized that I had 5 out of my 6 main characters done, I put something together last minute, and it stuck. She used to be solely light-hearted in her character, but I felt like she was becoming way too similar to Mari from Omori. Out of everybody in the dream, my image of her character was the least clear. She had a million different hair colors, and at first, she had the personality of Kenji. One day, she kind of just became Hajime, and I can’t really remember how it happened.

It’s kind of fun to write a character who just says anything. I want Hajime to be like an extension of the things we think but never say aloud, whether good or bad. She IS a walking, talking intrusive thought.

One theme that I have tried to weave throughout her character is complacence or acquiescence. Since she knows that most things in life are way out of her control, she focuses on the small concentrations of peace in her everyday life.
