The Boston Red Sox are one of the five professional sports teams Boston has to offer. They have a storied history that began in the early 1900s as the Boston Americans. The name was changed to the Boston Red Sox and it was one of the first eight teams in Major League Baseball (MLB) in 1901. The Red Sox won their first championship in 1903 but their championship in 1918 would be there last one until 2004. It was an 86 year drought that many believed was a curse caused by when the Red Sox traded Babe Ruth. After the 2004 World Series championship, the Red Sox went on to win 3 more World Series. They have a total of nine championships tying the Dodgers with the 3rd most World Series wins and just behind St. Louis and the Yankees. The Red Sox call Fenway Park their home and it is oldest active stadium in Major League Baseball. Some of the most notable players include Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, Fred Lynn, Wade Boggs, Dwight Evans, Jim Rice, Roger Clemens, Dustin Pedroia, David Ortiz, Pedro Martinez, Mookie Betts and Chris Sale.
