The violin originated in Italy in the early 1500s, after inspiration from bowed string instruments. Examples are the lira da braccio and rebec. The instrument became a regular occurence of classical music in the 18th and 19th century, becoming of one the most common instruments learned today. The first violin is given credit to the inventors in the city, Cermona. Andrea Amati was credited for creating the design we see today.
