Hades and Persephone

Demeter (goddess of the harvest) and her daughter Persephone left Mount Olympus and went down to Earth. When Persephone wandered off to pick a flower, the ground opened up and Hades (god of the underworld) snatched her away and made her his wife. Demeter, terribly distraught by her daughter's disappearance, left the earth untended for months at a time, thus creating the season of winter.
