Welcome to Lighthouses!

A lighthouse is a tower, building, or tall structure equipped with a powerful light designed to guide mariners and warn them of dangerous coastlines, shoals, and hazards. Using lenses to amplify light, they function as vital, often automated, navigational aids to mark safe passage for ships, serving as a reliable, analog backup to modern GPS. Above are three different types of lighthouses. Three distinct types of lighthouses are screwpile (built on iron pilings in shallow water), caisson (concrete filled cylinders set on the seabed), and skeletal (steel framework towers). These structures are tailored to their environment that range from deep water to treacherous shorelines which safely guide vessels.
